Food Miles and Local Produce
We take our food seriously here on the Devon/Dorset border an area of foodie heaven. We would like to tell you where we source our produce so you can be reassured that we know the provenance of all our food and drink.
Local Fairtrade and Clipper Teas & Coffee & Miles refreshments: Food miles are important to us so we try to use suppliers who are close to
Hedgehog Corner. Some of our suppliers are nationally known now such as Clipper Fairtrade Teas from Beaminster (Gold Taste of the West 2012) just 9 miles away and their luscious hot chocolate ready for your arrival. Introducing Miles Cafetiere coffee from this local family run business in Somerset - 53 miles from us. Their coffee beans are rosted in Porlock since 1888 - imported from all over the world.
Local milk and free range eggs: Our milk comes from Craigs Farm, Osmington, Dorset and our eggs from Stoney Farm, Bishops Caundle, Dorset - delivered by nearby Hangers Dairy of nearby Bridport. Sadly our milkman Farmer John Ody has just retired (July 2015) after 45 years exemplary service to local people.
Local Apple & Orange juice: We enjoy a day out to Four Elms Fruit Farm 20 miles away at Newton Poppleford to collect bottles of apple juice. They have won numerous prizes in the Taste of West, including non alcoholic drink Winner 2014.
Frobishers delicious fruit juice with no artificial preservatives, colour or sweeters, pasteurized to keep the freshness and taste, all produced in nearby Exeter.
Home Made Bread
Our freshly baked homemade bread is made using a "half and half" flour from the family run Wessex Mill: (Please request Gluten Free prior to arrival Butter is also locally sourced from Wyke Farm, Bruton.
Olive Oil: We use the very best olive oil from Elanthy for our bread. Their cold pressed olive oil comes from the Koreniki olive tree from their own mill in Kalamata, Greece with fresh oil delivered monthly to the Elanthy base in the Cotswolds. Cornish Sea Salt is also used in the bread making process with Doves Farm yeast.
Ganesha, the natural wholefood shop in Axminster, just 2 miles away, provides all the ingredients for our extremely popular home mix, fruit filled muesli, including jumbo organic oats and malted organic wheat flakes. (Note: nuts & peanuts).
Local Moores biscuits: The delicious biscuit selection found on your tea tray are from Moores in the neighbouring village of Morecombelake. They also have a retail shop – well worth a visit to purchase pretty tins of biscuits and cakes as gifts to take home.
Preserves: We have our very own Hedgehog Corner preserves in Marmalade with Whisky & Finest Extra Strawberry to accompany our freshly baked homemade bread.
Selection of individually boxed (32g) Kellogs cereals and individual pots of "Wolfy's Howlin' Good Porridge" in an amazing range of flavours are also in the basket.
We recommend guests visit "The Old Watch House" fresh wet fish shop at the Cobb in Lyme Regis and "Moore's Biscuits" also have a well stocked shop, ideal for gifts, in nearby Morecombelake on the A35.
"Millers Farm Shop" just 3 minutes drive along the A35 in Kilmington is superb with a huge selection of locally produced meats, jams, cakes, fruit and vegetables as well as other groceries. Thoroughly worth a visit
